Overnight smoke will continue to be a problem in portions of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Winds are expected to turn north after midnight, concentrating the smoke over northeastern North Carolina in the morning, according to the National Weather Service. The winds are expected to shift back to the south or southwest by this afternoon, pushing the smoke back into south Hampton Roads.
Code orange air quality is expected again in the region today through midnight. Fine particulate concentrations may approach or exceed unhealthy standards. Individuals with respiratory and/or heart ailments, older adults and children should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.
Motorists should be alert for sudden changes in visibility as a result of the smoke.
